What Is Overlanding, and Why Do People Do It?
As a modern adventure concept, overlanding originated in Australia and Africa and has gained enormous poularity in North America and across the world lately. Overlanding typically involves off-road or remote routes, often using four-wheel-drive vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, or even on foot. Overlanding emphasizes the journey itself, with travelers camping along the way and carrying essential supplies for extended periods. While it can range from weekend trips to multi-year expeditions, overlanding is about the experience of the journey rather than just reaching a place.
Key aspects of overlanding include:
- Self-sufficiency: Travelers bring their own food, water, tools, and camping gear.
- Off-road & remote travel: Routes often include rugged terrain, deserts, forests, and mountains.
- Adventure & exploration: The goal is to experience nature, culture, and diverse landscapes.
- Camping & living on the road: Overlanders typically sleep in tents, rooftop tents, or camper setups.
- Leave no trace: The overlanding community appreciates the great outdoors and strive to leave surroundings cleaner than when they found them.
Why Do I Overland?
To me overlanding started as a “spin off” after getting a designated car for hunting, an Isuzu D-Max with Alu-Cab Canopy and Alu-Cab Roof Tent mounted on it. I got introduced to people who share the same interestes I have for nature and the outdoors – and even some new hunters – and this passion has grown on my to almost become an obsession. I guess when you call your trucks “Max” and “Lux”, it’s probably gone a bit too far already, and you can rightly call it an obsession.
With my newest hunting and overlanding vehicle, the Toyota Hilux Arctic Truck 37 with an Alu-Cab Canopy Camper, I have customized by rig to fit my personal needs to perfection. It has become a truck and a home on wheels with all the equipment I need for shorter and longer adventures.
