ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SERIES – PART 2

Auxiliary power is key to enjoying your vehicle as the base for your outdoor adventures. By separating the two electronic systems or circuits and corresponding batteries – one being the one that starts and runs your vehicle – aka main battery, and the other one being the one powering all your lights, heat and other appliances at camp – aka auxiliary battery, you are set up for any overlanding adventure. In this series I will run you through how I’ve designed and set up my electrical system, and explain each component. Feel free to ask questions or share your feedback in the comments section below.
Orion-Tr Smart really is a smart device from Victron Energy that charges the consumer battery from the current generated from the car’s alternator when the engine is running, and which is completely disconnected when the engine is switched off. It all happens automatically so you don’t have to think about anything. The feeling of knowing that you charge the battery as long as you are underway, and that the battery is most likely fully charged when you arrive at camp, is a wonderful feeling.
The Orion-Tr Smart gives you peace of mind by topping off your battery while you’re on the move.
This unit has built-in Bluetooth, which allows you to follow the status via smartphone using the VictronConnect app.
The VictronConnect app is a very helpful supplement to your Victron Energy products.

Installation

Installation is straight forward but you should do some planning ahead of starting to drill holes through your chassis. You need to run wires from your alternator or main battery all the way to your Orion-Tr Smart, and to your auxillary battery. In order to save some cable length, proper planning is my best advice. Also make sure you use the correct cable dimension – a lot of amps are going through this device.

Sparelys

Both the battery and all my Victron Energy products were bought from Sparelys.no which is one of Norway’s largest outlets for solar panels, batteries, lighting and more for overlanders and others.

One aspect of hunting that still intrigues me, is that the more you hunt, the more you learn. And you will never be done learning. I almost learnt the hard way on a recent red deer hunt. I set myself up for a perfect situation with two red deer in front of me at around…
