The Alu-Cab Canopy Camper is an amazing product. However, it can be regarded as “incomplete” from the manufacturer, meaning that it is barely an empty box once installed. Each individual customer has to keep it that way (with a lot of empty storage space), buy or build the interior they prefer. Here’s my Alu-Cab Canopy Camper custom interior build.
As you already know, my Alu-Cab Canopy Camper was installed by Arctic Trucks Norway end of May 2023. I worked my ass off to have the interior ready for the Norex Festival at the end of June, however, I missed it by a few days. Once back from Norex, it was a matter of days before I could finally start enjoying the camper like I had imagined for so long. I used ArmaFlex for thermal protection in the bottom and sides of the flatbed.

I actually had a pretty good idea about how my interior build would look like. My rig is both for hunting and overlanding, and it obviosuly needed to work for both. We’re one or two persons travelling together and the ability to step into the camper and into the bed, without using the ladder I had before (with the Isuzu), was perhaps the main reason why I ended up swapping the Isuzu for the Hilux. I simply wanted a more convenient way of overlanding and using my car as the base for my hunts.
As with the Hilux interior build, I started out with cardboard. It is a great way of testing concepts and seeing in real life how theory works out in practice.

As shown in the picture above and below, my design revolved around a galley on the left side of the camper, accessible from the outside. I have the Alu-Cab 270 Awning on the left side of my truck, thus, this was the obvious choice. I guess calling this a galley is not entirely correct as it will not contain a cocking area as such, rather all the gear needed for cooking.

Work is progressing quite fast now, and the cardboard design templates are replaced with wood. The galley is more or less complete, and now I am on to working on the storage and seating, and also all of the 12V electrical wiring.

Here is a picture of the galley, or rather, the storage space accessible from the outside/left side of the camper.

I had already installed the increadible Auxbeam Switch Panel in my truck, and in order to manage all the 12V electrical equipment I opted for and Auxbeam Switch Panel in the camper as well.

The storage space on the left side under the galley is now done and I am moving my attention to the seating area which will be an L-shape covering the front and right side of the camper and having enough room for my Alpicool CX30..

Wiring the camper is pretty straight forward, depending on how many accessories you want to add. My advice is to think this through properly prior to starting the work as it is way harder to do once all the interior is completed.

I was determined to go with quality products for my electrical setup and chose to use VictronEnergy across the line. Included in my install are:
- Victron MultiPlus 12/1200/50 Combi Charger/Inverter
- Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 Charge Regulator
- Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A (360W) Isolated DC-DC charger
- Victron VE.Bus Smart Dongle
- Victron SmartShunt 500A

I chose to place all of the electrical main components in the front of the camper due to better weight distribution as well as for practical reasons (less accessible as storage).

The technical room is accessible both in front and from the top. I also perforated the top for better air circulation and cooling.

The interior build is finally done and everything is working. Via the Auxbeam Switch Panel I can control accessories in the camper as well as lights inside and out, the fan and auxillary power.

I am pretty happy with how this turned out, and once a few pillows are added to it, I guess the WAF will be pretty high as well.

The galley and storage area being filled up and we are getting ready for our first overlanding adventure testing out the new interior.

The very same day that the interior was completed, we went on our summer holiday and got to test it out. It ticket off all our boxes and we could not be happier!

This table was added soon after our trip as we realized this was a part we were missing.
